The first all civilian crew who went into the earth’s orbit gets their astronaut wings. A team of four amateur astronauts who soared into the Orbit on SpaceX’s Inspiration4 mission received their astronaut wings last week in a presentation at SpaceX’s headquarters in Hawthorne.
Jared Isaacman, Sian Proctor, Hayley Arceneaux, and Chris Sembroski were the four civilian crew members launched into orbit on the Crew Dragon Capsule on September 15; they splashed down back to the earth three days later.
Billionaire Jared Isaacman, 38, led the team, and SpaceX selected the crew members. Sian Proctor, 51, was an ex-Nasa astronaut, Hayley Arceneaux, 29, is a childhood bone cancer survivor, Chris Sembroski is an Air Force Veteran.
Alan Shepard Jr and Gus Grissom were the first to be awarded the astronaut wings for participating in the Mercury Seven program in the early 1960s. The SpaceX astronaut wing pin has a Crew Dragon capsule from which the dragon’s head and wings emerge. Each member’s name, role, and callsign engraved on the back of the pins. However, the wing is different from the commercial astronaut wings provided by the Federal Aviation Administration. Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic also have astronaut wings that differ from Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) pins.
