Everything You Should Know About 2022’s Box Office Hits

From the Multiverse to Pandora, even the biggest movie hits of the year couldn’t save the box office

2022 was a great year for the entertainment industry, with remarkable movies from several genres. Despite significant solo movies, franchise hits ruled theaters as audiences celebrated the sequels of their favorite films.

From Top Gun: Maverick to Avatar: The Way of Water, Hollywood was surprised to see audiences of all age groups flock to the theaters, making the movies a massive success. It is notable that Top Gun: Maverick is Tom Cruise’s first ever movie to join the billion-dollar club. It indeed was surprising because Maverick’s prequel, Top Gun, was released in 1986, over three decades ago. Avatar, the predecessor of Way of Water, was released in 2009, over a decade back.

Critically acclaimed movies like Everything Everywhere All At Once, The Whale, and Glass Onion: Knives Out Mystery also performed well at the domestic box office.

Domestic theater earnings are expected to end with $7.35 billion, according to box office tracker Comscore. The numbers for 2022 may not be up to the pre-pandemic era—2019 earned $11 billion—but it is safe to say that global hits and audience responses are contributing to the recovery in revenue.

Here are the top 10 domestic box office hits of 2022, according to Box Office Mojo:
