The talented New Zealand Olympic cyclist Olivia Podmore died at 24. The New Zealand Olympic Committee (NZOC) was deeply saddened after hearing the heartbreaking news and announced in a statement that “We offer our deepest condolences to family, friends, and others in the NZ community who are grieving this loss.”We are providing wellbeing support for members of her team and the wider team as we return home from Tokyo.”
Podmore was born in Christchurch, New Zealand. She received a silver medal in the team sprint and won bronze in the time trial at the Junior World Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan in 2015, to qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. She represented her home country at the Rio 2016 and the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games in cycling events that included the Keirin, team sprint, and the individual sprint. She did not play for New Zealand at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Podmore was recognized as the national New Zealand keirin champion in 2015.
Her brother Mitchell announced about the cyclist’s death, who shared the news on social media Monday, “Rest in peace to my gorgeous sister and loved daughter of Phil Podmore.” The reason for her death was not revealed yet. A spokesperson for the Waikato Police told New Zealand news outlet Stuff that, “Police are making enquiries in relation to the death on behalf of the coroner.” “The coroner will release their finding in due course.”
