5 Brilliant Movies That Flopped at the Box-Office

From The Shawshank Redemption to The Suicide Squad, these Hollywood masterpieces never saw a glimpse of box-office success.

Since the beginning of the cinematic era, Hollywood delivered numerous films that were instant hits and celebrated by fans. From spine-chilling thrillers to breathtaking action, some movies received overwhelmingly positive reviews but performed poorly at the box office. Blame the marketing campaigns or the absence of popularity, but these films deserved so much attention for their brilliant plot it held. Here are five Hollywood movies that flopped at the box office.

#5 Blade Runner 2049 (2017)

It is heartbreaking to say Blade Runner 2049, one of the best sci-fi films of all time, performed badly at the box office. The Denis Villeneuve blockbuster held a compelling story, with the film winning the Academy Awards for cinematography and visual effects. Yet, Blade Runner 2049 didn’t succeed in the theaters, collecting less than $100 million at the domestic box office.

#4 Ad Astra (2019)

Ad Astra is a widely praised epic space odyssey but it is disheartening to see the movie has received a poor box-office collection. It is even more saddening to see a Brad Pitt starrer flop at the box office with just around $55 million.

#3 The Suicide Squad (2021)

With the 2016 Suicide Squad disappointing fans, the James Gunn version of the dangerous team sparked hope for the fandom. The movie delivered thrill and amazement, but underperformed at the box-office, grossing only over $55 million at the domestic box-office.

#2 The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

The Stephen King adaptation is praised as one of the greatest movies of all time, yet, can you believe the film only grossed only around $28 million at the box-office? Unfortunately, yes. On the bright side, The Shawshank Redemption is an absolute fan-favorite for years in Hollywood.

#1 Fight Club (1999)

Controversies revolved around Hollywood before Fight Club was released, as rumors spread that the executives didn’t prefer the final version of the film. The reduction in marketing made the film less popular, gaining only $37 million at the box-office. Only fans know the worth and praise the movie deserved. Well, it’s something we can’t talk about…
