Greta Thunberg is the girl who launched the “Fridays for Future” movement- In 2018 she went on a strike outside of the Swedish parliament for climate change and then encouraged many students to skip school and demand action on climate change from their governments.
In September 2019 Thunberg condemned the world leaders in an emotional speech at the UN, saying ‘You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words. And because of her speech and her determination- In December, she made headlines.
Louise Macdonald, CEO youth charity Young Scot; Chair National Advisory Council for Women & Girls; President of EYCA, tweeted, ‘I find this picture so incredibly moving. This is @GretaThunberg aged 15, who sat alone outside the Swedish Parliament Aug 2018 – the first school strike. In just one year, she’s created a wave that will change the whole world. Never underestimate the power of one young person’.
This teen environmental activist pledged to continue her fight this year for measures to curb climate change. In an interview on Friday, the 17-year-old said she remains ‘determined…to have an impact and to change the way we treat the climate crisis, to spread awareness and put pressure on people in power.’
So if one young person could start such a fierce change in just a year, there is hope that it will grow and will definitely make a difference in 2020.
