From cleaning homes to performing surgeries, robots have come a long way. Robots can do many more incredible activities than you can even imagine. Robots are ready to beat human athletes by 2050! Yes, you read it right! A group of robotic scientists wishes to see a world cup football game between the great human football players and the best robots.
An organization founded by a group of scientists has been running global soccer tournaments annually since 1997. The name of the tournament is called “the Robot Soccer World Cup or Robocup.” The organization has high expectations of the robots, and one day, they hope to see them play with the best football players worldwide. The Robocup sets the motto and goal for itself that “By the middle of the 21st Century, a team of fully autonomous humanoid robot soccer players shall win a soccer game, complying with the official rules of (football governing body) FIFA, against the winner of the most recent World Cup.”
RoboCups have several teams, which consist of human-shaped robots with advanced artificial intelligence systems. These robots can make decisions on their own and they can pass or shoot the ball just like other human players. The size of the robots is quite small compared to actual humans. Can the robots beat the world cup champions by 2050? “It’s certainly plausible. I wouldn’t bet too much on it, but I wouldn’t bet too much against it either. Thirty years is a long time, technologically speaking. A lot can happen in that kind of time span,” Says Peter Stone, Robocup president and computer science professor at the University of Texas.
