Suleiman Kerimov is a Russian billionaire and politician who has been a member of the Federation Council, the upper house of the Russian parliament, since 2016. Kerimov’s wealth comes from his majority stake in Uralkali, one of the world’s largest potash producers. He is also the owner of Anzhi Makhachkala, a Russian football club. In 2007, Kerimov was arrested in France on suspicion of money laundering and tax evasion. He was later released on bail and has not been charged with any crime. Kerimov has been described as a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin. In 2016, he was placed on a U.S. sanctions list due to his involvement in the Ukrainian conflict.
