In 2007, Kerimov was arrested in France on suspicion of money laundering and tax evasion. He was later released on bail and has not been charged with any crime. Kerimov has been described as a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin. In 2016, he was placed on a U.S. sanctions list due to his involvement in the Ukrainian conflict.
