Ireland became the second country in the world to declare a climate and biodiversity emergency.
Earlier in May, the UK declared a climate emergency amidst protests in London where activists wanted the Government to take the issue of climate change seriously. The protesters succeeded, forcing the government to declare a climate emergency.
Now, Ireland has followed in the footsteps of the UK and the green party leader Eamon Ryan declared that it was time to declare a climate emergency especially after the UN-backed biodiversity report that talks about catastrophic levels of destruction if we humans don’t take steps to curb our unsustainable ways.
However, Eamon Ryan warned that “declaring an emergency means absolutely nothing unless there is action to back it up. That means the Government having to do things they don’t want to do,” he quoted.
Teenage activist Greta Thunberg tweeted “great news” appreciating Ireland’s landmark move.
