Avatar: The Way of Water, the sequel to the 2009 global hit Avatar, made its debut on the big screen last Friday, earning $134 million at the domestic box-office in the opening weekend.
Despite dominating the North American box-office through the weekend, the collection fell short as predictions expected the film to gross over $150 to $175 million.
The predictions ran wild after Avatar 2 soared through pre-ticket sales, which were on par with the superhero movies, but didn’t seem to hit the bullseye.
The Way of Water ties in with DC’s The Batman as the fourth-highest movie opening at the domestic box-office this year.
Both the films fall behind Marvel Studios’ superhero hits Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ($187.4 million), Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ($181 million), and Thor: Love and Thunder ($144.2 million).
The Way of Water is also Director James Cameron’s first film to earn $100 in its weekend debut.
The sequel to the world’s highest-grossing film earned about $434.5 million at the global box-office, a remarkable start for the highly-anticipated movie. Avatar: The Way of Water eyes on a $2 billion record at the global box-office to break even.
