Mattel is bringing back the purple T-Rex to the screen. A full relaunching of Barney the dinosaur TV series is set to stream worldwide by 2024. A total revitalization comprising film, YouTube content and music, toys, books, clothing for kids and adults, and many more are also under the plan.
“Barney’s message of love and kindness has stood the test of time,” Chief franchise officer and global head of consumer products at Mattel, Josh Silverman said, “We will tap into the nostalgia of the generations who grew up with Barney, now parents themselves, and introduce the iconic purple dinosaur to a new generation of kids and families around the world across content, products, and experience.”
The new updated Barney is based on the long-running Barney & Friends, which was first released in 1992 on PBS and ran for many years successfully. The show’s focus was fully on young children.
“In creating the new series, it was important to us that we properly reflect the world that kids today live in so that the series can deliver meaningful lessons about navigating it,” Soulie, the senior VP and general manager of Mattel Television said that, “With our modern take on Barney, we hope to inspire the next generation to listen, care, and dream big. We think that parents, many of whom will fondly remember the original Barney from their childhoods, will love the show, too.”
