Ruth E. Carter’s win for Best Costume Design marked the first time any Marvel Studios film has won an Oscar.
In the past, Doctor Strange and Guardians of the Galaxy have been nominated in the past for categories like Best Visual Effects. However, the studio has never been able to nail the Oscar.
The first Oscar was immediately followed up by the second ever Oscar for Marvel with Hannah Beachler winning for Best Production Design. The streak continued for a third time with Ludwig Göransson winning for the Best original score that featured musical heavyweights like Kendrick Lamar and Vince Staples. The Marvel cinematic universe went on to win the best visual effects for Avengers: Infinity War.
Black Panther created a stellar impact in the Box office, apart from being the first mainstream superhero movie featuring a dominant African-American cast.
Interestingly, Carter was the first black woman to win the category of ‘Best Costume design’.
Black Panther was even nominated for the Best Picture but lost to Green Book. That did not stop them from celebrating, for it had already raked in three awards and marked the beginning for MARVEL to win academy awards (that too, a handful). Find the entire list of Academy Award winners here.
