Porta dos Fundos, a Brazilian comedy troupe, sparked controversy in early December when its 46-minute video, ‘The First Temptation of Christ’, streamed on Netflix. It depicts a gay Jesus bringing home his boyfriend Orlando to meet the Holy Family. This same troupe had previously won an International Emmy for its hilarious take on The Last Supper last year.
Launched as a Christmas special on the streaming service, the problematic comedy received nearly 2.3 million online petitions asking Netflix to bring it down. And things got worse on Christmas Eve when the troupe’s office in Rio de Janeiro was set ablaze with Molotov cocktails. Thankfully, no one was injured during the incident and the fire was soon put out by the building’s security guard.
‘Popular Nationalist Insurgency Command of the Large Integralist Family’, a far-right religious group in Brazil, has claimed that it was the one responsible for the attack through a video that is now circulating on the Internet. It shows a few masked men throwing petrol bombs over the office building.
“We will move on, more united, stronger, more inspired and confident that the country will survive this storm of hatred and love will prevail alongside freedom of speech”, posted the troupe on Twitter after the attack.
