Captain Marvel is conquering the box office at a rapid pace.
It opened on Friday, collecting $61.4 million, $61.4 million after its domestic opening Friday night, of which $20.7 million came in from early Thursday previews. The Marvel film now holds the spot for the highest opening weekend of 2019 and became the first of the year to open to more than $100 million.
It made $153 million in ticket sales at 4,310 theaters in the U.S. and Canada from Friday through Sunday. It marks the seventh biggest opening for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the second-biggest debut of a new Marvel character on the big screen, only behind last year’s record-breaking Black Panther.
Captain Marvel is the first major film featuring a female lead (which is surprising as it took Marvel 21 movies) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With Anna Boden co-directing the film with her Ryan Fleck, Captain Marvel also marks the first woman to co-direct a Marvel film.
This must be a delight especially considering the skeptical, hate-filled reviews on Rotten Tomatoes earlier before the movie was even released.
