Filmmaker and writer James Gunn stated that he “tried” to portray detective Velma to be “explicitly gay” in his story for the live-action ‘Scooby-Doo’ film.
A twitter handle from a movie podcast said to James to depict Velma as gay in his future film and to this James said “I tried!”
He posted: “In 2001 Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script” (for 2002’s live-action “Scooby-Doo’), “but the studio just kept watering it down & watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) & finally having a boyfriend (the sequel).”
He also said that Linda Cardellini was cast as Velma for the live-action and its next part in 2004. In the sequel, Seth Green portrayed as her boyfriend, and the desire to portray Velma as gay was cut off.
This is because it was quite rare back in the 2000s movies. Moreover, GLAAD a non- profit association that looks after LGBTQ rep in the spotlight in 2013 stated that studios were “reluctant” to add LGBTQ portrays in action-based films.
Though CNN tried for comments from Warner Bros. they refused to speak on this.
Post the release of “Scooby-Doo” several popular production houses had gradually implemented gay characters in hit movies like “Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker,” and Pixar’s “Onward” and so on.
