A light show to celebrate the inauguration of a shopping mall in China descended into a total disaster. More than 200 computer-controlled drones were used to form the name of the shopping mall at the Wanda Plaza shopping mall in Zhengzhou High-tech Zone, Henan Province, but many drones began falling from the sky in the middle of the show.
Reports say nearly 5000 people, many of them children, were watching the show. In just a few minutes of the light show, many drones started falling from the sky. In video footage shared from the drone light show, people were screaming “be careful, back off” and running away from falling drones. Some of the drones even smashed into cars on the streets.
A spectator from the light show said, “More and more drones came off, Some flew very far away, and some hit the trees.” When the drones started falling, organizers and staff members allowed people inside the mall. It is unclear why the drone failure happened but the organizer said the issue might have been caused by operation errors. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the drone disaster.
In recent years, drone light shows have become increasingly popular. Most of the drone light shows are pre-programmed and are not self-aware. Despite the drone accident, many spectators said that they would still watch drone shows in the future.
