That was midnight when Café Américain was silent and empty except its tiresome and exhausted owner who fills his glass with a drink at his bar. It’s not clear whether it was a beer or whiskey or scotch as the name was barely seen.
The situation was filmed in black and white but the color of it gives plush tones. Further, a piano player enters and insists on the guy to sleep or go from the place in order to forget the bad past he went through. But to his bad, he doesn’t leave.
When the pianist begins to play Rick encounters a bump in his counter with so much heartbreak in his eyes which is the best part of the movie. The line states: “Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world… she walks into mine.”
Besides the captain of the movie Micheal Curtiz, screenplay writers it’s Humphrey who is the highlight and deserves the acknowledgment. He is the perfect blend of portraying vulnerability and tough masculinity which is the icing in the cake.
Humphrey depicts 3 main things one is a coat, a hat and a glass of alcohol. Be it any film of his liquor has been a part of it except the movie “The Petrified Forest.”
