Baumbach and Gerwig first met on the set of his 2010 film, Greenberg. At that time, Baumbach was married to actress, Jennifer Jason Leigh, who co-wrote the film. In 2010, Leigh filed for divorce from Baumbach after five years of marriage. 

In September 2012, Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig collaborated on Frances Ha. Baumbach later said to Variety, “What I didn’t know is that Greta was this incredible writer, I mean, I had a feeling she’d be a great collaborator, but that writing really was kind of her thing when she was in college, and so I really lucked out. It was amazing.”

In August 2015, Greta and Noah worked together on their third movie, Mistress America. The media began referring to Greta as ‘Baumbach’s muse,’ following their few collaborations. She told the Outlet, ‘I did not love being called a muse, I didn’t want to be strident about it or say, Hey, give me my due, but I did feel like I wasn’t a bystander.”

After years of speculation, the couple made their red carpet debut in January 2018. They stepped out together again for various awards. Noah and Greta welcomed their first child, Harold, in 2019. 

In 2020, Noah revealed how Greta influenced his work for the Hollywood Reporter, “It’s beyond advice it’s like the roots. She’s in there from the very beginning, Greta has lines in all my movies that are actually hers — I mean maybe things she said in life but also things she wrote that I say, ‘Can I use that?”

In July 2023, Noah and Greta welcomed their second son. They both got married on December 20, 2023, at New York City Hall.
