Hollywood’s shift towards female superheroes is growing and it’s actually getting great feedback.
It’s always a blockbuster year for superheroes and comic book movies. Superhero characters such as Superman, Batman, Supergirl, Iron Man, Captain America, and the list goes on but there are only a few female superhero characters.
Halle Berry’s 2004 “Catwoman” was a success and Halle gave her best performance as both criminal and hero. In 2017, Gal Gadot’s “Wonder Woman”, based on DC Comics’ Amazonian warrior, was a massive worldwide hit for Warner Bros.
Recently Captain Marvel – It is packed with action, humor, and thrills. Brie Larson is the female protagonist in the movie and it was also a success. There are many female lead character movies coming up such as- Black Widow, starring Scarlet Johansson, it will be appealing to the audience because Scarlet is a strong and dedicated actress.
But the films started to sexualize female characters. Research says that women play a variety of roles but all seems to be hyper-sexualized, they are portrayed with a small waist, alluring figure, revealing outfit. They are being objectified, but the male action heroes can be rather fit or obese with the armored outfit.
More female superhero movies are expected but they have to be portrayed in a proper manner. It is not about equality or copying male characters.
