India lifts its ban on TikTok

Earlier this month, the Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information technology ordered Apple and Google to remove the app from App Store and Play Store respectively after High Court authorities in the southern state of Tamil Nadu ordered a ban on the basis it was actively escalating pornography. and bringing about a “cultural degeneration.” The problem aggravated when a 19-year-old died while using TikTok.

But later in a quick turn of events, ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok came to terms and persuaded the Indian Government to lift the ban. They had to since the ban was yielding “financial losses” amounting to more than $500,000 a day and risking 250 jobs. India is a crucial market for TikTok since out of 188 million new global users in the last quarter, 88.6 million sign ups have originated from India. That’s almost half.

The App has come back on the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store after India reversed its order to ban the app.
