Nickelodeon Had to Add “The Last Airbender” in ATLA Title Because of James Cameron’s “Avatar”

The creators of the famed animated series had to add the additional title as Director James Cameron acquired rights for the name years ago.

Avatar: The Last Airbender (ATLA) is undoubtedly one of the best and most widely-appreciated animated shows (not anime) in the entertainment industry. The series also has one of the most loyal fanbases in pop culture. Even after nearly two decades after its premiere, they kept the fandom active, passing on the popularity through the years.

Despite being proud fans, the ATLA fandom tends to go through endless misery of people mistaking the series for James Cameron’s Avatar. And do you know the show was originally planned to go with just “Avatar?” But the idea never saw the light because of Cameron.

One of ATLA’s animators, Giancarlo Volpe, who directed 19 episodes in the show revealed how the creators had to add “The Last Airbender” as James Cameron has already obtained the rights for the title.

Volpe took to Twitter saying, “In 2004 we learned that we had to change the name of our show from ‘Avatar’ to ‘Avatar the Last Airbender’ because James Cameron already had the rights to a movie called Avatar. Now the sequel is called ‘The Way of Water’. If part 3 is called ‘The Firebending Masters’ we riot.”

“The Firebending Masters” is the title of an ATLA episode in Book 3: Fire, where Avatar Aang and Fire Prince Zuko learn firebending from the original masters, the dragons.

It is notable that Avatar: The Last Airbender aired from 2005 through 2008, four years before Cameron’s Avatar was released.
