The prolific rapper Jay-Z celebrated his 50th birthday on December 4th with a banging surprise. The Brooklyn rapper, song-writer, producer, record executive, and entrepreneur marked his day by releasing his entire solo catalog on Spotify.
Hov Is Handing out the Presents
Back in April 2017, Jay-Z (Hov- short for J-Hova, the Hebrew word for God. He has called himself the God of rap!) pulled most of his music albums from Spotify without an explanation.
One theory is that the streaming service’s freemium tier paid less than subscriber-only services. Another theory is that maybe it was his way to lure his fans to sign up for his streaming service, TIDAL ahead of the release of his new album 4:44.
Now the 22-time Grammy winner’s catalog is back in action.
Hov has returned to the streaming service Spotify, after a long two-year absence with his music catalog as a gift to his fans.
4:44 is now available for streaming on Spotify, along with his other albums, including The Back Album, Reasonable Doubt, Vol. 2, Hard Knock Life, American Gangster, The Blueprint 3, Watch the Throne, and much more.
Spotify Tweeted about the Breakthrough with a Social Media Post
“Happy birthday, Hov, Welcome back to Spotify,” tweeted the streaming service on Wednesday morning.
Fan reaction to this great surprise was mesmerizing. They tweeted “it’s about damn time”.
