A jury in 2019 found that Katy Perry’s 2013 hit ‘Dark Horse‘ was stolen from a 2009 Christian rap song in a unanimous decision. It is a rare occasion in which a pop superstar is being taken down by an obscure artist who is literally unknown to the world.
The nine-member federal jury in a Los Angeles courtroom took five years to resolve the dispute after Marcus Gray and two co-authors, first sued in 2014 alleging ‘Dark Horse‘ was stolen from their song ‘Joyful Noise,’ released under the stage name Flame.
After the verdict, the case is at a point where the jury will decide how much Katy Perry and co. owe for copyright infringement.
Released in 2013, in the album ‘Prism’, ‘Dark Horse’ climbed to Billboard No. 1 spot heaping praise for its unique blend of techno, pop, and trap along with a visually appealing music video set in an Egyptian setting.
The song “Joyful Noise,” on the other hand, was released by Marcus Gray who goes by the stage name Flame in 2008. The track was even nominated for a Grammy in 2009 in the Best Rock or Rap Gospel Album category.
