Lupita Nyong’O Learns How to Hand-Batik

The “Black Panther” actress, Lupita Nyong’o, traveled to Ghana and learned the traditional hand-batik art. It is a handicraft that became popular in West Africa in the mid-nineteenth century. In Ghana, Lupita got attached to the local culture and engaged in making Ghanaian textiles.

Hand-batik is a traditional Ghanaian dress-making method that involves wax application before they dye the material. Wax has the capability of resisting the dye. Thus, unique patterns will be created on the material. However, this technique requires a lot of time and patience.

Lupita Nyong’o was rather interested in learning this technique, hence she spent many hours learning this time-consuming hand-batik art. She created various patterns and colors in her style. 

Lupita has uploaded a video of her experimenting with the hand batik on her social media page. Additionally, she wrote a grateful caption for artisans who taught her the traditional textile-making technique. 

Lupita has the wonderful habit of tapping into her African roots. She has won numerous awards and accolades, which include an Academy Award. This Mexican-born Kenyan actress decided to travel after she confirmed her relationship with actor, Joshua Jackson. Nupita and Joshua were seen running some errands together in Los Angeles. Their friendship blossomed into romance after their recent breakups.
