The iconic seashore rock formation fondly called the Window of the Caribbean or Window Point is no more. The most prominent landmark of Puerto Rico, Punta Ventana slumped on Monday due to an earthquake that rocked the Island of Monkeys.
The beautiful rock formation located in Guayanilla along the southern coast had many tourist visits from all over the world before it was destroyed by the earthquake which recorded a magnitude of 5.8 on the Richter’s scale on Monday morning. The UPRM Meteorological Laboratory had shared the before-and-after images of the famous rock on its Twitter page with a caption that read, “The natural window disappears in Punta Ventana, Guayanilla”
“Today our icon remains in the memory of all,” Guayanilla press official Glidden López Torres said on Facebook.
It is reported that another earthquake followed on Tuesday morning with a magnitude of 6.4 on the scale and it is feared that the tremors killed one and injured many and triggered landslides in the surrounding areas.
“This is one of the strongest quakes to date since it started shaking on Dec. 28, said Angel Vazquez, the emergency management director for the southern coastal city of Ponce, and further added that it lasted a long time.
