The US president Joe Biden has been facing negative criticisms over his exit strategy in Afghanistan. Even Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell didn’t spare him. He slammed US president Joe Biden’s ‘botched exit’ from Afghanistan when the Taliban invaded the capital city of Kabul.
McConnell wrote in a statement, “The Biden Administration’s botched exit from Afghanistan including the frantic evacuation of Americans and vulnerable Afghans from Kabul is a shameful failure of American leadership.”
McConnell’s comments have spread like wildfire over a press conference in Kentucky on Monday. He stated during a press conference in Kentucky, “I think Afghanistan is lost. Every terrorist around the world is cheering in Syria, in Yemen, in Africa. They’ve watched the Taliban … defeat America in effect.”
The Taliban took control of Kabul overnight on Sunday. Afghan President Ashraf Ghan left the nation on Sunday morning in order to avoid bloodshed and the United States is pulling all personnel from the embassy in Kabul.
Members of GOP lawmakers began to blame the worst situation in Afghanistan on Biden, who declared in April that he would ask all troops to retreat from Afghanistan following an agreement with the Taliban, arranged by former president Trump, to retreat military personnel from the country.
McConnell wrote that “America’s two-decade involvement in Afghanistan has had many authors. So have the strategic missteps made along the way. I have never hesitated to express myself candidly when leaders of either party threatened to put politics ahead of reality on the ground.”
He added further, “It did not have to happen this way. The United States had the capacity to avoid this disaster. We still have the capacity to dampen its effects, but without a presence on the ground or local partners, defending the homeland from a resurgent al Qaeda will be far more difficult.”
“The strategic, humanitarian, and moral consequences of this self-inflicted wound will hurt our country and distract from other challenges for years to come,” McConnell wrote.
McConnell continuously accused Biden and said that the president is responsible for the “monumental collapse” of Kabul.
