Netflix bids adieu to Marvel’s roster of Superhero series’ with Punisher and Jessica Jones discontinued from the streaming service after ending its licensing partnership with Disney-owned Marvel. The license lasted 5 years.
Disney+ is going to launch its own service this year where it would be hosting its Marvel shows to give a strong competition to counterparts Netflix and Amazon.
One would expect Netflix to move away from Superhero shows after the Marvel’s fallout but they seem to be firmly rooted in reaping success from Superhero shows by launching Umbrella Academy very recently. It has acquired comic book company Millarworld to develop other superhero films and series. Netflix, for sure, anticipated this day and equipped itself with countermeasures.
There is definitely a lot of money in Superhero franchises especially after the thumping success of Arrow, Gotham, and Daredevil. Production houses are less likely to part with their characters with companies like Warner Media looking to rake in the entire DC universe into its own streaming service due for launch this fall.
