The Hips Don’t Lie singer, Shakira, 45, is not planning to back down. She hit back at Spanish authorities on Nov 25. She called their $14 million tax case against her a fraud one. She declared in her statement that she is innocent and the authorities have “no solid evidence” against her.

“Shakira is a taxpayer who has always shown impeccable tax conduct and has never had tax problems in any other jurisdiction,” The statement from her legal team also read, “With no solid evidence to support the charges against her, she has been fiercely persecuted in the criminal and media spheres using unacceptable methods to damage her reputation and force her to come to a settlement agreement.”

The rockstar also filed legal documents in her defense on the same day. She claims that she was not a full-time resident of the country from 2012 to 2014, hence she need not pay income taxes. It is according to Spanish law, she is alleged to pay taxes if she spends 183 days or more in one year.

A court date is yet to be scheduled and Shakira is ready to take the trial. The statement also revealed, “Shakira wishes to express her absolute confidence in the independence of the Spanish justice system and her firm conviction that, after the trial, her full innocence will prevail,” the statement read.

A Judge from Barcelona court ordered pop singer Shakira to face trial for committing tax fraud in Spain.

In addition, the Spanish prosecutors want Shakira to spend eight years in prison for not paying around $14 million to their government.

On the other hand, Shakira’s representatives said that the Colombian singer has paid $17.2 million to the Spanish government comprising tax amount and its interests.

The lawsuit began in 2018 when the Spanish prosecutors accused Shakira of committing tax evasion asking her to pay the taxes for her stay in the country between 2012 and 2014 because she has spent more than half her time there.

“First of all, I didn’t spend 183 days per year at that time at all. I was busy fulfilling my professional commitments around the world. Second, I paid everything they claimed I owed, even before they filed a lawsuit. So as of today, I owe zero to them,” Shakira told Elle magazine.

Shakira, whose real name is Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, has told that she didn’t move to Spain until 2015.
