The pandemic has affected everything in the world. Do you know how it changed the finale season of the hit series “Shameless”?
John Wells, the showrunner, told The Hollywood Reporter that he always wanted Frank (Willaim H.Macy) to pay for the years of alcohol abuse and bad parenting and was ready to kill the character in the finale. As the pandemic stalled the final shoot, Wells had time to tweak the ending to suit the situation.
He wanted to create an awareness of how people in South Chicago lived at the edge of poverty, and preventing such a deadly disease was not possible. He wrote the scene to have Frank die alone in a hospital without his family knowing his whereabouts.
The writer portrayed the appalling ending with humor because Frank and Frank always go in style no matter if he is dead broke or on the death bed.
After 11 seasons and 134 episodes, “Shameless” ends with Frank dying alone in a hospital due to COVID with visions from the introductory scenes. The other Gallahagers, except for Fiona, celebrate Ian’s wedding Mickey at the Alibi.
The open-ended climax doesn’t answer numerous questions like whether Lip sold the house. Veronica and Kevin sold the Alibi to moved into Louisville, or how the Gallagher family fares without Frank.
The writer has not mentioned any spin-offs or sequels for the show at present, and he simply wanted to let the audience figure it out themselves.
