The co-production deal on making Spider-Man movies between Sony and Marvel expired and fell apart when Disney was unhappy with the offer made by Sony to renew the deal. However, the two studios came to an agreement to make one more MCU team-up movie to address the massive backlash from the fans of MCU and Spider-Man.
Considering the COVID situation, the movie is expected to release in December 2021. After that, there’s no hope for Spider-Man to be featured in Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The move will see us bid Goodbye to the character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The possibility of future collaboration fell apart after Sony denied Marvel Studios a bigger stake in future Spider-man films.
In this post, we’ll analyze four main questions:
Back in 1999, when Marvel was going through murky waters of bankruptcy, it had licensed several of its characters to different film studios with Spider-man being one of them, licensed to Sony. Years down the lane, when Marvel had recovered remarkably from its financial crunch, it bought those film rights back for all its characters, except, well, of course, Spider-man. Sony refused and Marvel was forced to share the revenue coming out of Peter Parker. And that was a modest five percent of first-dollar gross, as well as all merchandising revenue. Now that Marvel is eyeing more, Sony is shutting Marvel out from any future collaboration.
By Spider-Man, we mean the Spider-man Universe here. Sony now owns on several Spider-Man-related characters, such as Venom played by Tom Hardy starred as Venom in the 2018 film of the same name. It was a hit, thanks to Tom Hardy, raking $856 million globally with plans for a sequel.
After seeing the thumping success of Disney-owned Avengers: Endgame, Sony sees Spider-man as its only way to stay alive in the Superhero genre Spider-man: Far from home is by far the highest-grossing movie of all time and this probably gives a reason for execs to dream bigger, better things. Sony is desperate to stay alive in the comic genre and Spider-man will be its likely cash-cow.
Disney who owns Marvel demanded a bigger share of upcoming Spider-man movies after denying to renew the existing agreement which earns them a mere 5 percent and merchandising rights. With the latest success in Tom Holland’s Spider-man, both sides of the parties are vying to get more out of it, or in simple layman’s terms, greedy.
Spider-man was crucial to Marvel’s plan. Now a split between Sony and Disney would mean that Tom Holland’s Spider-man will disappear from MCU.
Spider-man Far from Home was essential to give the audience a much-needed transition from the Thanos saga to a new storyline, Marvel’s phase 4. He was a central character in Marvel’s future and now, he’s pretty much gone.
At least we can stop expecting Peter Parker bringing up Tony Stark now and then.
