The Islamic State terror group has claimed responsibility for the Easter Sunday bombings at churches and hotels in Sri Lanka that killed more than 300 people. The group’s news agency Amaq stated that the attacks were carried out by Islamic State fighters. The Sri Lankan government is facing flak for major security lapses and shoddy investigation.
The recent Easter bombings in Srilanka claimed the lives of 321 people and injured more than 500. For some time, no terrorist group came forward to claim the attack. ISIS, though has now seemed to claim the attacks, but without any substantial proof.
Srilankan government believes that the attacks were a retaliation against the Christchurch mosque shootings in New Zealand in March which killed 50 and injured 42. Srilankan Government blames a local jihadist group National Thowheed Jamath (NTJ) for Asia’s deadliest terror attack.
Police have detained 40 suspects in connection with the attack. A BBC correspondent said that the ISIS statement should be taken cautiously as the ISIS may simply taking credit for the attacks because no other group has so far come forward. A state of emergency is in effect to prevent further attacks.
