Next time you’re sweating like a pig in your gym, instead of taking selfies to boast your body on Instagram, try swearing.
Yes, you heard that right. Drop the F-Bomb in the middle of your workouts.
A joint research conducted by The UK’s Keele University and Long Island University in Brooklyn set out to find if yelling slurs and screaming out-of-the-syllabus rants were beneficial during workouts.
And to much of their surprise, it indeed was.
The study found that swearing made people strong. Swearing produced more power in the anaerobic workouts and gave the participants a stronger grip.
Swearing enabled people to tolerate pain as it stimulated the body’s sympathetic nervous system– the system that’s responsible to make your heart pound faster in the times of danger.
One of the study’s author, Richard Stephens said that–
“Swearing appears to be able to bring about improvements in physical performance that may not be solely dependent on a stress response arising out of the shock value of the swearing.”
He continued–
“We know that swearing appears to be handled in brain regions not usually associated with language processing. It is possible that activation of these areas by swearing could produce performance improvements across many different domains.”
During cycling, the group that was asked to swear performed 4.6 per cent better than the group that was asked to perform the same task without the swearing.
In the hand grip test, people who yelled cusses performed 8 per cent better than the folks who did not.
