Taiwan becomes the first Asian country to approve same-sex marriage

Looks like 20 years of LGBT rights activists’ efforts have finally borne fruit.

Taiwan’s legislature voted on Friday to constitutionally approve same-sex marriage, in a first by any Asian country. Policy makers were sandwiched between widespread protests of LGBT activists and the hardcore Church organizations.

Lawmakers instead went over and apart from allowing same-sex wedlocks, even entitled same-sex couples the benefits that are available to married, straight couples like insurance and child custody perks.

The journey began in the 1990s when the ruling Democratic Progressive Party stood for gay and lesbian relationships and wanted Taiwan to stand out as an open and inclusive culture in Asia.

Will other Asian countries follow route? Let us know in the comments!
