The Mitchells vs. the Machines’ Teaches Kids about LGBTQ

The animated family movie should be appreciated for portraying LGBTQ on-screen!

It looks like a ground-breaking animated movie hit the big screen to fill the gap of significant representation of LGBTQ in animated family movies. Netflix’s and Sony Animation’s latest animated release, The Mitchells vs. The Machines, embraced queer representation. The protagonist‘s identity is purely queer. This American movie is made for all ages.

Maya Rudolph, Abbi Jacobson, and Beck Bennett positively impacted LGBTQ+ through this major animated movie. Mitch in Paranorman became the first character in an all-ages American animated film.

The movie is released, and apart from being a joyous, feel-good, laugh-filled movie, the story is also focused on the suburban family who needs to save the world from tech overlords. One of the major characters called Katie Mitchell is presented as queer.

Abbi Jacobson, who voices Katie Mitchell, stated that “I love that Katie’s queer,” he continued, “I’m queer, so it was so refreshing to get to play a teen queer girl in an animated movie. That’s not something I’ve done before, and I haven’t seen that that much. I didn’t grow up with that. I think it’s so important for young people to see that. The [movie] is about a fracture in a family, and it has nothing to do with the fact that Katie is queer. It’s just something that’s only celebrated and accepted in her family. I think it’s so rad for kids to see it. Maybe even more rad for parents to see it. So I was excited to be a part of that story.”

In the most recent trailer, you can sense the queer code vibes with Katie noting, “it took a while to figure me out,” and can see more coding along with this line.

Even in one family scene where Katie’s mother asked several questions related to her relationship with a classmate who is a girl. “Are you and Jade official, and will you be bringing her home with you for Thanksgiving?” which confirms Katie is a lesbian or bisexual.

The Mitchells vs. The Machines has done an awesome job focusing on a queer hero!
