The Once Holed Arctic Zone Closes As Pollution Subsides!

Nature has mended itself! Yes, you heard it right!

Due to heavy pollution, the ozone had a hole which was thought to be a bigger issue across the globe.

But now it has closed which is “unimaginable” and it was possible only post-shutdown and the air has been clear for the few days and researchers have stated that it is incredible.

The hole in the important layer of ozone was guarding the earth against deadly radiation of the sun and now it has set a fresh record by covering the hole in the northern hemisphere which was formed last month.

The worn-out area was approximately the size of Greenland and extended till the polar icecap.

Further, in the previous week, Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) stated that the ozone which was depleted is well again.

Despite previous holes that were in the ozone in the northern hemisphere researchers stated: “the first time you can speak about a real ozone hole in the Arctic”.

Cams also added that the hole was due to the abnormal weather condition in the Arctic. To be specific cold temperatures and strong winds created a “polar vortex” paving way for freezing conditions which eventually led to a big depletion in the ozone.

The firm tweeted: “Although it looks like the polar vortex has not quite come to an end yet and will reform in the next few days, ozone values will not go back to the very low levels seen earlier in April.”

When the question raised whether it was because the air is pollution-free due to shutdown to avoid the spread of COVID-19, the firm stated that: “This Arctic ozone hole actually has nothing to do with coronavirus-related lockdowns, but rather was caused by an unusually strong and long-lived polar vortex.”

Moreover, in a previous editorial speaking on the causes of ozone hole researchers told that: “While we are used to ozone holes developing over the Antarctic every year during the Austral spring, the conditions needed for such strong ozone depletion are not normally found in the northern hemisphere.”
