The Urban Island heat can harm many Americans of color.
Cities across the world are suffering from fever. People who live in the city suffer through humid temperatures during summer compared to people who live in greener areas. Scientists call this dangerous consequence of living on an “urban heat island.” The Urban Heat Island can trap heat. What is worse is that the urban heat island effect can harm neighborhoods within a city, especially those with fewer income residents and people of color.
The main problem with those cities is that they were constructed in a way to trap heat. Satellites can observe this marvel from space. Researchers working with NASA used satellite data to find the map changes in surface temperatures ranging from suburbs to cities.
It is very risky to discover ways to cool them. More people died due to the extreme heat each year in the United States than any other climate-related event over the last 30 years. Now, this deadly heat didn’t spare New York City. It is captured with thermal cameras to find the urban heat effect.
If you look into the map, it shows neighborhoods in NYC are considered the most heat-vulnerable. The average land surface temperature is rising more than 110 degrees Fahrenheit.
