Recently the Popular Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune’s things were exhibited titled “The World Famous Mifune” at Tokyo in a store in Shibuya. The main aim was to remember his 70th anniversary of Toshiro’s acting career and his contribution to 150 and odd movies.
Mifune was born in 1920 and went on to live till 1997. He was part of the MGCC Japan Center which is associated with the UK MG car club. Toshiro’s love for British cars also had his 1962 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud. However, he was more with TD where he was seen often in the roads of Tokyo going to and fro to the movie studios.
Further, he had the 1952 edition vehicle for more than 45 years and it is now under their family foundation. He was not only the prominent actor in the west but had also worked with one of the most ace directors in Japan Akira Kurosawa. He was also seen in some Hollywood movies like “Hell in the Pacific (1968), Midway (1976), and Grand Prix (1966).”
Hell in the Pacific was known to be a reunion film with only 2 characters American Aviator (Lee Marvin) and Japanese service person (Toshiro) get caught up in a desert island in World War II. In the beginning, they start as rivals and later realize that only if they join hands they can live and work together.
After this, he portrayed an Admiral with Hollywood stars Charlton Heston, Henry Fonda, Charles Coburn, and Robert Wagner. In his other movie, Grand Prix Mifune is portrayed as Soichiro Honda. The main lead is James Garner, and there are guest appearances as Graham Hill, Phil Hill, Juan Fangio, Jim Clark Dan Gurney, Bruce McClaren, Jack Brabham etc.
Though he starred in few Hollywood films he was well known was Kurosawa’s Yojimbo in 1961 where he portrayed as ronin a Samurai.
