Jennifer Lopez’s latest Netflix sci-fi flick, “Atlas,” is sparking a conversation. At the star-studded Los Angeles premiere, Lopez didn’t just shine on the red carpet; she also shared her candid thoughts on the ever-evolving realm of artificial intelligence
In Atlas, Lopez plays a data analyst who must harness the power of AI to save the Earth from a menacing robot, portrayed by the charismatic Simu Liu. While the plot is a thrilling mix of suspense and technology, Lopez’s real-life concerns about AI add intrigue to the events. She expressed her mixed feelings, saying, “I think the movie does a good job of showing how AI can go incredibly wrong, and how it can go right.”
She recounted some disturbing experiences with AI, including instances where her image was used without permission in misleading advertisements. “It’s really scary. We had them steal our faces right away,” she lamented, highlighting the dark side of AI. She emphasized the need for respect and openness toward AI’s potential, striking a balance between caution and curiosity.
Meanwhile, in another corner of the Hollywood spectrum, Netflix co-CEO, Ted Sarandos, offered a reassuring counterpoint. In an interview with The New York Times, Sarandos expressed his faith in human creativity, saying, “I don’t believe an AI program is going to write a better screenplay or turn in a better performance than a better writer.”
The recent conflict between OpenAI and Scarlett Johansson has fueled the uproar over ChatGPT 4o’s unauthorized use of her voice. Johansson’s allegations against the AI firm have put Hollywood on edge, adding to the concerns expressed by Lopez.
As Atlas streams on Netflix, Hollywood’s love-hate relationship with AI is just beginning, and promises plenty of drama on and off the screen.
